Dog behavior and Owner perceptions

Is dog training in Richmond worth it? Dogs are like humans. They can be cute and cuddly and they can also be downright annoying and destructive. The only way to keep them well-mannered is to invest your time and energy in training them. You can think of dogs as children.

Remember the times when you went to Walmart or Target and found toddlers throwing tantrums? Yelling and screaming while rolling on the floor? Well, your dog isn’t going to do the same thing but it will exhibit unacceptable behavior that will get on your nerves.

These so-called “meltdowns” can be controlled through dog training. Before we go into controlling unwanted behavior let’s first consider what bad behavior looks like.

Factors that Contribute to Dog Behavior

Breed – some dog breeds are known for excessive barking and digging

Age – a dog’s age will also predispose it to bad behavior. Unwanted behaviors are often manifested by puppies than adult dogs.

Training – bad dog behavior can be corrected through proper training methods. The wrong method can backfire and cause more problems.

Situation – bad behavior depends on the situation like a dog can bark if there’s a stranger outside your home.

Personal preference – some pet owners consider a behavior acceptable while others consider it a nuisance

What Is Considered Bad Dog Behavior?

Generally, behavior is considered bad if it is unwelcome and excessive. Some examples of notorious bad behavior include jumping up, whining, digging, begging, barking, chewing, counter-surfing, urine marking, chasing, leash pulling, and biting and nipping.

Some of these annoying behaviors are innate in your dog such as barking and chewing but they will only be considered unacceptable if they keep on repeating it even after correction. Luckily, you can correct and control these behaviors. Here’s how to do it.

How Do You Control Bad Dog Behavior?

The first thing you need to do is to determine why your dog is misbehaving. There must be a reason why a certain reaction was triggered. There are medical conditions that cause your dog to exhibit poor behavior like an ear infection or bladder infection. Dogs that have ear infections are more sensitive to sound and so they bark in response.

Those with bladder infections tend to urinate in the house. Other factors that trigger bad behavior include anxiety and stress.

Prevention – as mentioned, it’s important to identify what’s triggering your dog to behave a certain way. Find out what the trigger is and eliminate it. When the trigger is eliminated your dog will not act out. For example, don’t leave food scraps on the counter so your dog will not counter-surf.

Needs – know your dog’s needs. When you are aware of your dog’s needs they won’t have to behave badly.

Activities – one of the reasons why dogs chase or dig is because of their bottled-up energy. Remember, dogs are like kids. We suggest you schedule a time for them to exercise so they can spend their energy outdoors. Exercising with your dog also helps strengthen your bond.

Ignore – learn the art of ignoring your dog. Sometimes dogs deliberately misbehave to get your attention. They beg, bark, or jump up. The best way to deal with this type of behavior is to ignore it until they get tired. Eventually, your dog will learn and change its behavior.

Keep Calm – even if your dog is misbehaving you should strive to remain calm because even the slightest hint of excitement like shouting or yelling will make your dog think you are encouraging the behavior. Keep your voice low and your gestures deliberate.

Having a dog is a wonderful experience. Dogs are loyal, compassionate, and they are definitely fun to be with until they exhibit annoying dog behaviors. When your dog is starting to misbehave, use these tips that you learned here. These helpful strategies will train your dog to behave.

The Difference Between Sushi and Sashimi

People often get confused with sushi and sashimi and they tend to use the two interchangeably. These two are different. Sashimi is a unique Japanese dish that consists of raw and fresh fish that are thinly sliced and often paired with a rice siding. To put it simply, sushi always has rice but it doesn’t necessarily have to have fish. The most challenging part about preparing sashimi is the meticulous and laborious cutting technique. All sushi chefs are required to undergo training on how to properly slice fish. It should not be too thin nor too thick as it will affect the taste of the fish.

The Different Types of Sushi

Sushi looks simple but the preparation required to make sushi is complex which is why sushi chefs need to practice and master the craft of preparing sushi to get the desired cut and taste. The following are the different types of sushi:

Nigiri Sushi – the most common sushi in Japan is nigiri sushi. Nigiri sushi is prepared by pressing rice to form a cylinder. A foil of raw fish will then be placed on top of it. When you order a nigiri sushi, you will be served with soy sauce where you’ll dip the sushi. The name of the sushi is actually derived from the technique used to prepare it. Nigiri actually means, “Hand pressed”. Wherever sushi bar you go to you will definitely find nigiri sushi. It takes on an oval form that has rice, fish and wasabi on it. To enjoy nigiri sushi, you must dip it in soy sauce nad consume it slowly in a single bite.

Maki Sushi – In Maki sushi, the rice is placed on top of dried seaweed called nori seaweed and is combined with fruit, vegetables and fish. Everything is rolled and cut into eight equal pieces. The term Maki means coiling. The difference between the two is that black seaweed is used in making maki sushi. The taste is very delicate and often it is described as diverse since you can add different types of fruits and vegetables and meat to make maki sushi. You can add avocado, mango, cucumbers, Philadelphia cheese, steak prawns and many more.

Preparing Sashimi

There is so much skill and mastery needed to perfect the unique and accurate slicing technique to make sashimi. In fact, out of all Japanese dishes, this is by far the most complicated to make. Creating beautiful slices of sushi requires constant practice.

Sushi Grade Fish Explained

The term sushi grade fish is used to describe raw fish that is considered safe to consume. There are no official guidelines for this and it’s thought to be used for the purpose of marketing. However, fish vendors use the term sushi grade to describe the highest quality fish they have as well as the freshest. This fish is given extra care to significantly reduce the risk of foodborne diseases. Basically, fish vendors freeze the fish before selling them. It is important to mention that this sushi grade is not a regulated terminology and it’s entirely up to the interpretation of the vendor whether or not they consider a fish as sushi grade.

FDA Regulations

Even though there aren’t any actual regulations set that will determine if a fish is considered sushi grade the FDA or the Food and Drug Administration placed strict and specific regulations when it comes to handling and preparing fish that are to be eaten raw. The guidelines called Parasite Destruction Guarantee discuss the required temperatures and times for a number of fish species. The temperatures and times must be strictly followed for the fish to be considered safe.

Freezing and storing at surrounding temperature of -20°C or below for a total of one week.

Freezing at the surrounding temperature of -35°C or below until it is solid and storing at surrounding temperature of -20°C or below for one whole day.

Freezing at surrounding temperature of -35°C or below until it is solid and storing at surrounding temperature of -35°C or below for a total of fifteen hours.

It is believed that the extremely low temperature will destroy the parasites living inside the fish when they were caught. It is important to note that the process of freezing and storing must be done immediately as soon as the fish is caught in the boat. Once the fish is caught it has to be cleaned and gutted and must be stored in a freezer for at least eight hours.

5 Organic Coffee Brands Your Customers Will Love

organic coffee cupFrom monocultures to deforestation and unfair wages for laborers, it is hardly surprising that so many commercial coffee brands now leave an unpleasant taste among an increasingly knowledgeable consumer market.

You might even be surprised by knowledgeable diners who now seem to be requesting, more than ever, to know the origins of the coffee your restaurant is serving. Some are merely interested in knowing that their coffee is grown organically, and is free from the amount of pesticides and herbicides that commercially grown coffee is so infamous for.

However, an increasing trend among coffee connoisseurs is the interest in coffee grown sustainably and fairly traded, as well. This is something you should be a bit studied up on, in order to satisfy these customers. There are a few things that you should minimally know.

While the number of traditional green coffee plantations continues to grow all the time, there are still many suppliers who rely on farming techniques like ‘sun growing’ for their regular coffee bean harvests. The problem is that these techniques create monoculture plantations which are extremely bad for the environment.

organic coffee plantationThey destabilize the character of arable landscapes, depend on huge amounts of pesticide and fertilizer for productive crops, and they contribute to the felling of millions of hectares of virgin rain forest every year. Thus, the question that many coffee drinkers are now asking themselves is, can my morning latte or lunchtime cappuccino possibly be worth such destruction?

Well, the good news is that we do not have to make a choice between luxury and environmental health – these two things are not exclusive. If you want coffee that your customers can enjoy, while making certain that you support the maintenance of green farms and suppliers, all you have to do is to try out some organic or Fair Trade coffee brands. To get you started, we’ve included some recommendations below.

Don’t Neglect Regular Maintenance for Your Restaurant Heating and Cooling System

Do you constantly shrug off cleaning or maintenance checks on your restaurant HVAC system? It might seem like a menial task that doesn’t add anything to your bottom line, but it could be more important than you might think. It only takes one instance of the AC breaking down on a hot summer day to cost your restaurant more than a year’s worth of maintenance fees, in terms of lost business. But there are other reasons to maintain your HVAC system, in addition to prevention of emergencies.

HVAC maintenance is a preventative measure which helps keep the system running without any breakdowns, meanwhile operating at 100% efficiency. Most restaurant AC systems are hidden away on the rooftop or behind the building and it’s very easy to forget or neglect it completely until when it breaks down. Remember, regardless of how expensive or how many warranties are in place, the system is definitely vulnerable to breakdowns. According to AC repair specialist, Tim Engelsma of Engelsma Heating and Cooling in Grand Rapids, MI, scheduling regular cleaning and maintenance is the best way to guarantee fewer repairs.

Benefits of HVAC Maintenance

The cost of maintenance might be a concern, especially for a large AC unit, which is the reason why many restaurant owners ignore this task altogether. However, below are some prominent benefits of cleaning or performing maintenance tasks on your furnace or air conditioning system.

• Reduced Energy Bills
If the system is not working as properly as it should, your energy bill might be through the roof. There are many reasons why it may not be working efficiently, including the fact that there is dust or debris trapped inside the vents. If the maintenance is not performed regularly, it’s easy to assume that it’s working properly when it’s actually not.

• Less Repairs
If you notice a strange sound in the system or a strange odor coming from the furnace, it’s crucial to schedule cleaning or maintenance before the consequences are devastating. If you notice any trouble early enough, you’re likely to save yourself a lot of money which could be wasted on expensive repairs later on. If you schedule maintenance every year, the chances of getting expensive repairs diminish greatly.

• Extended Life Span
HVAC systems are quite expensive to install. Therefore, if you made a significant investment in the system in the first place, you should schedule maintenance tasks regularly to guarantee an extended lifespan. Cleaning your furnace or the air conditioning system will reduce any chance of breakdowns which might demand partial or total replacement of the whole system. Regularly inspecting the system to make sure everything is working properly will increase the life span of your system.

• Safety
If the furnace is not working properly, you could be putting staff and customers at risk due to exposure of carbon monoxide. HVAC systems powered by electricity can short circuit at any time which is a serious fire hazard. Also, if the air conditioning is not working properly, especially during the cold winter nights, chances of freezing are slightly increased.

• Hiring A Professional vs Doing It Yourself
There are a few cleaning and maintenance tasks you can do on your own to save on the expenses but the rest should be left to the heating and cooling service professionals. Start by changing the air filters every month to prevent clogging which slows down the system. Also, you should remove any debris present on the outdoor unit by hosing it down. Finally, you should make sure the return and supply registers are not blocked by furniture, equipment, rugs or drapes.

The professional HVAC contractors will check the thermostat, tighten the electrical connections, lubricate all the gears, inspect the condensate drain, check the system controls, adjusting and cleaning the blowers, cleaning the condenser coils or evaporators, checking the refrigerant charge, checking the fuel line connections, inspecting the gas pressure, heat exchanger or burner combustion etc.

There are a few things to consider when looking for a professional HVAC contractor. If you prefer hiring a company for the job make sure all the contractors are properly licensed, have enough experience and have a high level of reputation which can be assessed through reading reviews and testimonials from former clients. On that note, with these tips, you should have enough reasons to clean your furnace and schedule maintenance tasks for your air conditioner.
